Widely considered to be potentially major players in Ligue 1 at the outset of the season, Saint-Étienne’s unconvincing start has had pundits backtracking. Disappointing away losses to Valenciennes and Le Mans have sandwiched an unconvincing triumph over Sochaux. The visit of Olympique Lyon may, therefore, not be an obvious point from which to build a season.
Midfielder Christophe Landrin is not necessarily of this attitude, asserting that Sunday’s derby match is the ideal time for his team-mates to raise their collective game. Landrin cites last season’s derby match at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard, which ended in a 1-1 draw as Lyon scored deep into stoppage time, as a source of inspiration.
“We do not doubt ourselves yet but, admittedly, we have not found that certain something that made us such a force last season,” Landrin told Sainté’s official website. “The derby falls at a point that allows us to redeem ourselves after a poor start to the season and for the supporters to enjoy themselves. This headline match arrives early in the season; I hope it is the start of a great adventure.”
Lyon have an excellent recent record against their local rivals, who have not beaten les Gones since 1994 – a run of eight matches (six draws and two Lyon victories). Nevertheless, Landrin suggests that if Sainté’s attitude is good, then the match is theirs to be won.
