Blackburn manager Paul Ince spent two years at Inter in the mid-1990s, and when he departed the club in 1997 to return to England with Liverpool, a young Uruguayan called Alvaro Recoba arrived at San Siro.
Recoba made his debut for the club on the same day as Ronaldo, overshadowing El Fenomeno with two wonder goals in a 2-1 win over Brescia.
The forward was then tipped for great things, but despite his stunning ability and magical left foot, he never really fulfilled his potential.
Recoba spent last season on loan at Torino but did not remain after a disappointing campaign. The 31-year-old’s contract at Inter expired at the end of June, and he is now a free agent, meaning that he can join a club outside of the transfer window.
According to reports in Italy, Recoba is on the verge of signing for Blackburn, whose manager Ince is known to be a huge admirer of his talents.
Recoba’s agent Saif Rubie last week admitted that his client wants to play in the Premiership, stating: “At this stage in his career he wants to play in the Premier League and we are hopeful he will end up there.”
