Pedro Mendes Handed Shock Portugal Recall

Rangers midfielder Pedro Mendes has been handed an unlikely international recall by Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz ahead of the World Cup qualification campaign.

The ex-Portsmouth player has not played for his country since February of 2003, when he featured in the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Italy.

Mendes has only one other cap to his name; his debut came in 2002 when Portugal defeated Scotland 2-0 in a friendly.

However, the Champions League winner has now been handed a surprise reprieve from the international wilderness for the upcoming clashes with Malta and Denmark.

Rangers play Glasgow rivals Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the season, and the timely boost will no doubt come as encouragement for the erstwhile Porto star.

The 29-year-old, signed earlier this month from Pompey for �3million, is one of a staggering 18 players summoned for international duty from the Ibrox side.
