Gross Delighted But Cajuda Left Fuming After Basel Victory

Christian Gross was left ecstatic after his Basel side secured their ticket to the Champions League group stages with a 2-1 win over Vitoria but his opposite number Manuel Cajuda was filled with quite different emotions come the final whistle…
Despite losing on the night the manager of the Portuguese side believes that were it not for some controversial refereeing it would be his side who would now be crying tears of joy rather than sorrow.

In an angry outburst after the game Cajuda remarked, “ The defeat is very bitter. In Portugal there were two disputed decisions against us and tonight we were denied a clear goal. We should actually be in the Champions League but instead it is Basel.”

After a goalless draw in Portugal it was predictable that both sides would be keen to score early so as not to take the tie to penalties. Indeed, within just the first twenty minutes Valentin Stocker had opened the scoring for Basel only for them to be pegged back a few minutes later when Joao Paulo Fajardo slotted home a penalty.

Knowing they needed a goal to progress Basel finally one through Eren Derdiyok, who scored just ten minutes into the second half.

Gross was understandably unconcerned by the disallowed goal and preferred to focus on his sides successful passage through to the group stages instead. Speaking after the game he gushed, “It is fantastic for FC Basel. We are enormously happy. We worked enormously hard for this goal. It is worthwhile if one works so intensively and so consistently.

“I would like to thank the fans for their fantastic support. We have them to thank for this.”

After his initial outburst Cajuda did have some kind words for Basel, saying, “ I wish FC Basel all the best fortune and good luck. Perhaps we will see them again sometime.”
