Just a couple of weeks ago Rangers crashed out of European football at the hands of Lithuanian minnows Kaunas. The Ibrox faithful were subsequently bracing themselves for a long, hard season with a threadbare midfield.
At that point, Steven Davis' potential switch from Fulham looked to be dead and skipper Barry Ferguson had been ruled out for the opening portion of the season.
Now, though, Davis has checked in along with Portuguese maestro Pedro Mendes. Buoyed by their display against Aberdeen, despite only taking a point, defender Kirk Broadfoot (pictured) is in a confident mood ahead of Sunday's Old Firm derby.
Broadfoot told the Daily Record: "Pedro is experienced enough. He's a European Cup winner and nothing will phase him.
"You could see from Pedro's touches against Aberdeen and his class on the ball that he's brilliant and can really help us next week.
"We can just give him the ball and let him calm the game down."
Wonderful
Aberdeen gaffer Jimmy Calderwood also conceded that Mendes, who joined from Portsmouth, can be a key player for Rangers this term.
In his column for the Press and Journal, he admitted: "In the middle Steven Davis was running the show along with Pedro Mendes and Kevin Thomson. They are three good players and it was difficult for us.
"I did not think we were playing that badly in the first half but Mendes was wonderful.
"He has terrific range in his passing and he has great patience and decision-making on the ball.
"They may have been missing Barry Ferguson but they still have great players and gave us a bit of a lesson in the first half."
Rangers took the lead through David Weir, but Derek Young lashed home a leveller against the run of play and DaMarcus Beasley had a goal harshly ruled offside in the dying seconds, having smashed Mendes' through-ball into the net.
